Product Description
Curb Your Enthusiasm is the brainchild of star-creator Larry David, who cocreated Seinfeld and was the basis for the easily rattled George Costanza. Like George, David has a tendency to speak too much, blow things out of proportion, and, most often, fail in the end (and often liking it that way). David's new show is also like its predecessor; it's about nothing except following the day-to-day ramblings of a sometime writer and comic (this time in LA). Eternal questions stemming from universal daily dilemmas are honed to perfect comedic absurdity. A notable exception is that the show is only scripted by plot; much of the action is improvised. The first season starts with a one-hour mockumentary following David's return to stand-up for the first time in years. The other 10 episodes follow a more traditional sit-com setup. David plays himself (as does his friend, Richard Lewis) although his manager and wife are played by comedians Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines. Although this first season is a comedic gem, one can't take more than an episode or two at a time--it's caustic, biting comedy. The episodes are often built like a house of cards, which the irritable David will surely collapse by the end. --Doug Thomas ....read more £6.03 £25.99 Average Customer Rating

Some hilarious moments, but also some dire rubbish on this DVD. As for the “one hour special” don’t bother.
Stick to Seinfeld.
From the beginning

Curb’s a great show, season 1 starts off tamely but it gets funnier with each episode and season.
if you dont get it

I managed to!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Larry David, co-creator of the hugely successful TV show `Seinfeld’, writes and stars as himself in this curiously quirky faux-reality show, based around his supposed day-to-day life and experiences he has had. David is joined in most episodes by celebrities such as actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, comedian Richard Lewis and Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, amongst others. David’s `wife’ Cheryl (played by Cheryl Hines) and his `agent’ Jeff (Jeff Garlin) are the other recurring characters as well as Jeff’s foul-mouthed and abusive wife, Susie.
David portrays himself as a grouchy clumsy and tactless buffoon; his celebrity friends and pretty much everyone else he encounters, either annoy, misunderstand or misjudge him, often with bizarre outcomes, including numerous scuffles, slanging matches and fallings-out. Embarrassing misunderstandings abound, whether with an obsessive shoe salesman, a fellow patient at the doctors’ or a retired porn star he meets at the golf club. David generally makes things worse; either through sarcasm, belligerence or just a seemingly perverse desire not to conform. Basically this is a subversive and ruder version of Seinfeld, filmed using hand-held cameras and made as mockumentary rather than sitcom. There were some great moments in the series and I liked the surreal edge, however I found the bad language to be gratuitous and intrusive and after a while I had to subsume the desire to want to punch David’s `character’ very hard. The series is now in its seventh year and shows no sign of slipping in popularity; so he must be doing something right!
Quite possibly the biggest heap of crud ever broadcast…
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This series has to be the biggest joke ever pulled on an audience. It is insincere and a shameless con from somebody who trades on a little Seinfeld credit to raise his profile. Larry Davis who writes, yes, writes and stars in this piffle, makes claims that this show is improvised. It isn’t.
Mindless sheep devoted to this program bleat and repeat the sales pitch on and on about it being unscripted, cutting edge comedy, performed by genius actors who can adapt to the situation and provide their own dialogue. Rubbish!
This program was recently affected by the strike in Hollywood. How does something this loose get to be affected by the writers strike? Only if it was scripted. The improvised tag line is used to cover for the fact that the show employs poor quality, has-been actors, especially LD. Umming and arring between lines and passing lines to each other is uncomfortable and stilted.
If you have to compromise to find this funny then this is not comedy gold. This is trendy trash TV for the cliquey type of viewer. Cries of ‘you just don’t get it’ suppose that there is something intelligent behind the comedy, there isn’t. It is cheap, and effective, but there is nothing to get, at all.
Whether he was funny writing for Seinfeld (another unfunny TV show) or not, LD is most definitely not funny here.
This program reeks of processed food.
worst show ever – don’t be fooled by the 5-star reviews, this is NOT funny!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This is the worst show ever produced – taking advantage of Seinfeld fans misguided loyalty, and the wrongful thought, that since this is made by Larry Davis, it has to be good… it don’t!
After a couple of episodes (if you actually get this deep into it before throwing away the dvd’s) you realise that the dialogue actually follows the same structure and speech patterns that Seinfeld does – only this show has no proper actors or comedians to deliver the lines.
It’s stiff, slow, tries to hard but keeps on failing, annoying, embarrassing and quite frankly a disaster.
I have no idea who these guys are that gives this 5 stars, but they have to be family of Larry’s.
I bought the entire series based on the stupid 5 star reviews and the fact that I too thought that ‘Larry Davis, this can only be good’ – but I’ve had to through the dvd’s out without even seeing all the episodes.
Waste of time and money!!!
plastic and unfunny
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Sorry, but I bought this on the basis of the other reviews and I really can’t see what they see in it.
The script is really plastic, the acting stiled, the filming is reminiscent of poor quality home movies.
And as far as I am concerned, this is just so unfunny it is tedious!
why you should meet larry david
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Somethings are best left unsaid, or rather, left to be said by the genius that is Larry David.
Curb is bold, brilliant, laugh out loud and most of all, one of a kind.
if you feel even the slightest bit curious as to purchasing this dvd boxset, or just simply buying season 1 and working your way up, then i must say, you are doing the right thing.
for moments at home on your sofa, with someone or by yourself, you’ll realise that you have stumbled upon something that i can’t praise enough.
so order the dvd, wait for the arrival, and sit back, as larry david and the rest of the amazing cast take you to a level of comedy, only described as perfection.
Improvised comedic gems

Larry David has a tendency to speak too much, blow things out of proportion, and, most often, fail in the end (and often liking it that way). David’s new show is also like its predecessor: it’s about “nothing” except following the day-to-day ramblings of a sometime writer and comic (this time in L.A.). Eternal questions stemming from universal daily dilemmas are honed to perfect comedic absurdity. A notable exception is the show is only scripted by plot; much of the action is improvised. Well, Larry David, creator of the over-rated SEINFELD, plays himself in a Los Angeles version of Seinfeld with bad language and strange situations. Partners in crime include Larry’s agent and best friend, Jeff Greene, and comedian-friend Richard Lewis. Other celeb’s, such as Ted Danson, make an appearance. With every episode, Larry runs afoul of almost everyone he encounters, not to mention his wife, Cheryl, and Jeff’s shrewish wife, Susie. In Season 1 included are many classic moments, among the best might be the disastrous “porn dinner party,” where Larry is forced to do an embarrassing “double goodbye.” None of the shows, however, are weak.
Having watched CYE recently, and when factoring in Larry’s seven seasons on Seinfeld, I now subscribe to the Tao of Larry. What is it, you ask? Perhaps it’s that people are functionally insane; that no good deed goes unpunished (or bad deed for that matter); and that we are creatures of passion and habit, not our environment. Some might find Larry the world’s most obnoxious man. Others (and I’m one) might find him the funniest. If there is a “Seinfeld Curse” it certainly does not apply to Larry. While at times too confrontational, Larry is more often than not, I think, right. Some people wonder, “What Would Jesus Do?” I often wonder, “What Would Larry David do?” Spread the word.
Understandably, people have made comparisons of CYE and Seinfeld, which Larry David had a major hand in. However, in my opinion it’s much better than Seinfeld. Fans of The Office will easily take to CYE, (and will be able to see where Ricky Gervais stole some of his ideas from!).
It’s not a show for minors due to some of the language as well as some of the situations and themes, which are not particularly suitable for kids. However I think that this is one of the rare occasions where adult themes and strong language work well in a TV show and somewhat surprisingly, demonstrates how frequent swearing can be made to be very funny indeed!
Larry David’s life, as presented in this HBO series, is one long excruciating faux pas. The plot twists in this first season sometimes come across as a bit too forced and coincidental, an aspect that was greatly improved upon in the second season, but the most important question is: Are the laughs there? They certainly are. The criticism of some reviewers that a little Larry David goes a long way is well taken–your enjoyment of this series will depend on how you feel about him. I think he’s funny. The episodes guest-starring Richard Lewis are doubly funny. They should make greater use of him as a foil for Larry. They have great chemistry with natural, unforced repartee.

that was me laughing my head off
The funniest stuff I’ve ever seen.
My wife said he was very funny, but she won’t watch it because Larry is offensive and shouts argues a lot.
For me the funniest bit ever though is where his mate tells him to climb inside someone’s a**ehole when they offend him.

I watched a couple of shows of curb your enthusiasm on e4 a few years back, but couldn’t really be bothered remembering what day it came on. I don’t like waiting a week for an episode. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed curb and I’m now an avid fan of the show, but I don’t think it will appeal to those who enjoy their sitcoms with laugh tracks and the jokes spoon fed to them. I heartily recommend it to anyone who is a fan of comedy shows such as the Office and Alan Partridge. Oh and if you liked George ‘Cant-Stand-Ya’ on Seinfeld, the Seinfeld character based on Larry David, wait till you see the genuine article…Hilarious!
Larry David – Comic Genius!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Curb you enthusiasm is absolutely fantastic, the best thing I have ever watched ever!!! It took me a few episodes to get into it as the format is very different from anything else I have watched, but it wasn’t long before I was hooked!! Series 1, I think, is the best series, but the rest are still amazingly brilliant though. Each episode is very cleverly put together and the storylines are hilarious!! Funniest show I have ever seen by far!! Highly recommended. BUY IT!!
Funniest Comedy Ever Made
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Some of this is so funny you will laugh so hard that it will give you aching ribs after watching. It is filmed as if it is a fly on the wall documentary, following real life Hollywood script-writer Larry David as he fails in his attempts to get through each day without messing up. No matter how hard he tries, things go wrong. Very wrong. He is also extremely unconventional in social situations, leading to many farcical scenes. At times very rude, and never dull. This is surely one of the best shows ever made for TV.
Surely one of the most outspoken comedy characters ever
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Seeing as Seinfeld is and always will be one of my favourite sitcoms of all time it was impossible for me to ignore this. I always get the feeling that Larry David is one of those rare people that only wants to be part of something if he is 100% sure that it will go down in history as something special and he has definitely succeeded again with this.
Like Seinfeld I only saw the odd episode of this when it was first shown on BBC2 but kept on missing it and wanted to watch it from the beginning in the correct order so I waited for the DVD releases. It was a gamble because I didn’t know for sure how funny it was at the time and I only knew Larry David because of Seinfeld, but the gamble paid off big time. One of the things I have always liked about this programme is that I am never sure if Larry is going to come out of each episode smiling or not, it keeps me guessing till the very end. Another great thing is I have mixed feelings about his outspoken opinions as in most of the time I agree with what he says and sympathise with him in awkward situations that he gets himself into and then he will get into another awkward situation where I think he only has himself to blame. Either way it is laugh out loud funny. The only bad thing I can say is that there is only ten episodes a series, but quality will always be better than quantity and when you add them all up there will be at least fifty to laugh at over and over again.
So if you have still not seen this wonderful programme yet and you are not easily offended (as a lot of bad language and difficult subject matters), then you are extremely spoilt as you can watch all five series (if you can afford to buy them or borrow them) all at once, you lucky people.

Whilst I do not own this box set, I do have all the series’ individually. I bought the first series in blind faith through a recommendation of a friend, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The problem with CYE is trying to describe it to people who don’t watch it. Countless times I have recounted particular episodes to people who haven’t watched them, and even as I’m saying it, I know it’s not working. But talk in the same way about the same scene with someone who has already seen it, and you will both be in hysterics.
This program is one of the funniest things I have ever had the pleasure to watch, but I can see that it won’t appeal to everyone. To find this funny, you have to be comfortable with the subject nature at hand, which almost always consists of very bad language (c-word is used, surprisingly for an american show!). A lot of the episodes touch on areas such as Racism/Sexism/Anti-Semitism, and in such a realistic, crass way, that some people may be offended by it.
The funniest thing about this though is the embarassment factor. Like Alan Partridge, you spend most of your time cringing at the embarassing nature of the main character, and you’re practically shouting at the TV “Don’t say it!” because you know it’s wrong. But what makes this superior to Partridge, is that it’s semi-scripted and uses a lot of improv, and the fact the Larry David is playing not only himself, but playing himself in a negative light.
I would recommend this to everyone, but try and watch a few episodes before you buy it as the style of humour might not be for you. I know it works for me, and I love it!
Digger
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Basil Fawlty, Alan Partridge, Larry David – what do all 3 have in common? Loud, boorish, socially inept and prone to digging themselves into big holes. The difference with Larry is that he lives in Southern California where everyone appears to be confident, friendly and assertive. So there’s no reserved, inhibited Brit for him to tussle with; he comes up against people who will eat him for breakfast. Larry the Moron, however, is married up with Larry the Respected Celebrity. He brushes up against Hollywood movers and shakers and this is rather clever in that the show can never be accused of being a celebrity zoo a la Absolutely Fabulous who seem so anxious to get a “face” into the show that they don’t think about giving them funny or relevant dialogue. CYE is different. Larry is on a constant collision course and it’s a glorious cringe-fest. This is a first rate show and I love the excruciating humour. I have just one complaint: I can’t imagine someone as bumbling as Larry attracting such a trophy wife as Cheryl. Surely an inability to attract/keep a partner would be more inkeeping with his character?
Just an observation. Nonetheless, I give it 5.
Life with all its problems and distractions
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had never heard of Larry David until someone lent me the DVDs of series 4. In no time at all I was hooked and watched 4 episodes one night and 4 the next.
There is something fascinating in watching Larry David amble through his life, encountering every possible sort of social or relationship problem along the way, and dealing with it totally incompetently, compounding the issue until the viewer is squirming in embarrassment.
The cast of characters is broad – his agent and his wife, friends, colleagues, and business partners – including Ted Danson (who plays himself of course) and Ted Danson’s wife. It is this strange mixture of real life and fiction which makes this series unique – Larry is playing his real self (the creator of Seinfield), but at the same time has a mixture of real-life and fictional people around him.
While some of the dialogue may be scripted, much of it is ad-libbed. Strangely, this works, and gives the impression of documentary rather fiction.
Jack Dee uses this format in Lead Baloon and having seen the Dee series before the David series, it became clear very early on where Dee got his inspiration from. Even the wives have a similar approach to life, being gently observational and mocking, rather than continually being angry at the pathetic messes their husbands get into.
I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a dry, slow-moving comedy, laid back in the extreme. It is not for those who prefer more obvious jokes and set-pieces.
Unable to curb my enthusiasm……..
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Larry David has taken comedy to a new level with Curb Your Enthusiasm. If you like the cringe-making humour in Extras, you’ll love this, and in fact you’ll spot many elements that have clearly inspired Extras. There are very few one-liners here (much of the dialogue is improvised) but the genius is in the excrutiatingly ridiculous situations that LD ends up in – for example he is asked by his wife to place an obituary in the local newspaper, but when it is published the ‘A’ of ‘Aunt’ gets replaced with the third letter of the alphabet so that ‘Beloved Aunt’ does not appear quite as it should. But for me the emphasis on plot rather than one-liners really works, and when I now see a sitcom where every line and nuance of the script has been has been carefully orchestrated, it just seems so artifical and old-fashioned – even Seinfeld, which LD co-wrote. This set is a bargain price and you also get the pilot episode. You can’t go wrong!
pure comic gold

curb your enthusiasm is the brainchild of larry david who stars as himself, albeit with a few new dimensions thrown in perhaps, david is the co-creator of seinfield,a show i have never watched, but thats not important.
The first series is so sharp that its nigh on impossible not to be drawn towards it,larry david is a success in life but he has people problems, there isnt a day that passes without confrontation or an awkward moment and everything that he does usually comes back to haunt him,the other characters around him all add to the shows brilliance.
The key episodes here include the one with the obituary for larrys wifes aunt and the bracelet but in truth they are all great and this is essential viewing.
